The iconic wagon has been around for decades and it is still pretty much one of a kind, with its fantastic mix of wagon practicality and SUV-like off-road potential. That’s why we were pretty excited to see all the updates that were introduced with the 2023 model year, which received a mid-cycle refresh. If you‘re familiar with Subaru’s production cycles, you know what’s next – the 2024 Subaru Outback will represent the final production year of the current generation and, therefore, we don’t believe it could bring more important updates. Instead, we expect to see the same design.
That same design has so many great things to offer, starting from the recently updated styling and new tech features. Also, there is the model’s typical practicality, along with an excellent all-wheel-drive system and two capable powertrain options. The famous wagon comes well-equipped, whether it’s about safety or tech features.
As no bigger changes are about to come, we are pretty sure that the 2024 Subaru Outback will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year.
2024 Subaru Outback Design
As we’ve just mentioned, the 2024 Subaru Outback will represent the final production year of the generation. Therefore, we don’t believe it could bring any more notable change. Instead, we expect to see the same layout that was updated last year with a couple of interesting things. Of course, the most notable is the new styling, which includes new headlights, revised front fascia, new bumper etc. Also, we should mention the new Onyx trim, which also includes a couple of exclusive details.
On the other hand, we didn’t see any notable mechanical change. This chassis and suspension setup is the same, which isn’t a bad thing at all. Moreover, this wagon offers a great mix of comfort and athleticism, thanks to the soft suspension setup that comes in a combination with a low center of gravity and an excellent all-wheel-drive system.
Interior
The same thing is for interior design. It will also continue in the same way, featuring a cabin layout that has so many great things to offer. The dashboard still looks modern and competitive, with the good build quality and a generous offer of standard and available equipment. Furthermore, higher trim levels also utilize high-quality materials and feel pretty luxurious.
Thanks to the wagon body and respectable exterior dimensions, the amount of cabin space is pretty generous. There are two rows of seats and both accommodate adults with ease, offering a very high level of overall comfort. Furthermore, the cargo area is also very generous. You may count on about 32.6 cubic feet of space behind the second row and a pretty respectable 75.6 cubic feet of the total cargo volume, which is on par with compact SUVs like the Honda CR-V or Nissan Rogue.
Features
We don’t believe that the next year’s 2024 Subaru Outback could bring more important updates in this aspect. Moreover, things should remain pretty much the same, with the same or very similar list of standard and available equipment. So, we expect to see base models equipped with goodies like dual 7-inch touch screens, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a four-speaker audio system, automatic climate control, remote keyless entry etc.
Higher trim levels would offer upgrades like an 11.6-inch touch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hot spot, two additional USB ports, a six-speaker audio system and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start, remote start and a moonroof.
2024 Subaru Outback Engines
Under the hood, you may count on a choice between two familiar boxer engines. Base models will continue with a good-old 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated flat-four with a max output of 182 horsepower. That seems decent enough power to move a vehicle like this but we would always go for the upgrade, which comes in the form of a 2.4-liter turbo flat-four, which is rated at 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Both engines come coupled with a CVT, which feels pretty smooth and refined.
In terms of fuel economy, both engines offer decent ratings. The base engine is good for about 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The turbocharged engine returns around 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, which is pretty decent if we consider the standard all-wheel drive. The max towing capacity goes around 2.700 pounds with the base engine and 3.500 pounds with the turbo flat-four.

We expect to see the 2024 Subaru Outback hitting the market sometime in the last quarter of the year, with a starting price of around 30.000 dollars.
