The current generation of Honda’s super-practical minivan has been around for about three or four years and after the last year’s refresh, we are pretty sure it will remain in production for a few more years. However, that doesn’t mean that the upcoming model years will be no more than carryover models, at least if we can trust rumors. Some sources have been speculating about a high-performance version of the minivan for a wihle and we presume this model would come as the 2022 Honda Odyssey Type R, sometime in the next year.
At this point, this is still a rumor, while the officials are still quiet. So, the only thing we could do is to speculate about it. We presume that the upgrades would come in various aspects, starting from a more powerful engine, chassis and suspension upgrades, new brakes etc. Also, we would expect to see styling upgrades that accentuate the models performance character, as well as a couple of nice touches on the inside.
2022 Honda Odyssey Type R Engine
Of course, one of the first things that come to mind is the engine. The standard model comes with Honda’s well-known and proven 3.5-liter V6, which puts out around 280 horsepower. While that’s enough for pretty strong performance, we presume that the 2022 Honda Odyssey Type R could come with something even more powerful. As the Civic’s turbo-four feels a little bit too small for a minivan, we presume that the choice would be a turbocharged V6.
This refers to the 3.0-liter turbo V6 engine, which powers the new Acura MDX Type S. This engine puts out around 355 horsepower, which seems more than enough to provide respectable performances, such as 0-60 time in less than six seconds. Some rumors even speculate about the Honda’s well-known SH-AWD system, which could be offered either as a part of standard equipment, or as an option.
2022 Honda Odyssey Type R Design
Naturally, the engine wouldn’t be the only upgrade on this version. We would expect to see all kinds of other upgrades, starting from a new suspension setup and other chassis modifications. When it comes to the suspension setup, we would expect a little bit stiffer setup, though the overall layout probably wouldn’t change that much. In other words, we would expect to see a typical McPherson setup at the front and a double wishbone on the rear end. We also expect to see bigger brakes.
Besides mechanical upgrades, we would also expect to see a lot of exclusive styling details, which would accentuate the model’s performance character. This refers to things like grille, as well as to bumpers, which would come with a more aggressive design. Furthermore, we would expect to see things like front splitter and rear diffusor, as well as a nice wing on the rear end. Finally, we count on unique wheels and lower-profile tires.
Interior
Some interior upgrades would come too. However, it’s hard to imagine how a minivan can look sportier from the inside, where these vehicles are all about practicality. So, one of the things that come to mind is to see a little bit different dashboard layout, with a couple of new materials and new color schemes. Is this minivan going to feature a completely red interior just like the Civic Type R? It’s hard to say.
What’s easy to say is that the 2022 Honda Odyssey Type R will certainly offer the same level of practicality as the standard model. We count on three rows of seats with plenty of space for adults, as well as on a pretty generous cargo area. Still, the latter could be a little bit smaller compared to base versions, due to the possible addition of all-wheel drive.
Features
As we are talking about a minivan that would cost much more than a regular version, it’s pretty easy to conclude that the list of standard equipment would be really long. So, what we expect to see a full load of tech features, starting from goodies like n 8-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless device charging, navigation, additional USB ports, an 11-speaker stereo, satellite radio, and HD Radio. The list of standard equipment should also include things like tri-zone climate control, remote start, keyless entry etc.
We also expect to see a full load of safety features on the list of standard equipment. This means things like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, rearview camera and many more.
2022 Honda Odyssey Type R Release Date and Price
Although rumors suggest that the 2022 Honda Odyssey Type R could arrive already in the next year, the fact is that the officials are still quiet about this high-performance minivan. Therefore, we are pretty sure that this model won’t even happen. At best, you should take it with a huge reserve. If it arrives one day, we presume it would cost way more compared to base versions, which are available at around 33.000 dollars.
