2023 GMC Savana Best Work Van: MPG, Specs, and Price

Sometimes, it’s better to keep things simple. That’s probably in the minds of all those buyers of GMC Savana, a van that has been around for so many years and still marks good sales numbers. Simply, this is a perfect choice for workers, who need a reliable and capable van, and that’s exactly what Savana is. The 2023 GMC Savana carries on in the same way, 27 years after its original launch.

Don’t let be fooled by its age, the Savana still has a lot of great things to offer, starting from unmatchable reliability and class-leading towing capacity, which goes all away up to 10.000 pounds. This van is customizable and comes in both passenger and cargo variants, while this year’s model brings a few updates, mainly in terms of the notably more expensive prices. Furthermore, the diesel version is no longer available.

2023 GMC Savana Design

So, the 2023 GMC Savana comes in a familiar way. Just like its close sibling, Chevy Express, this pickup was originally introduced in 1996 and other than the 2003 facelift, we didn’t see significant changes, at least when it comes to the chassis and exterior design. Today, this is one of the rare vans that ride on a classic body-on-frame chassis, with a proper ladder frame. That makes it heavier and less maneuverable compared to the competition. Still, on the other hand, you may count on superior durability and towing capacity, which goes all away up to 10.000 pounds.

In terms of aesthetics, there isn’t much to talk about. This is a classic van that hasn’t been updated for two decades. So, it looks pretty basic, with a front-end design that belongs to another era of the automotive industry. It’s good to know that there are two versions on offer regarding the wheelbase, with 135 and 155 inches between the axles.

Interior

Not many things have changed in the last two decades, so the Savana looks pretty outdated these days. However, the cabin is extremely functional, which is far more important in this class of vehicle. First of all,it is extremely spacious. The front seats are well-designed, spacious and comfortable. Standard-wheelbase models can transport 12, while long-wheelbase models can carry up to 15 passengers. On the other hand, the cargo version offers quite respectable 287 cubic feet of space.

Base models come with aid conditioning, power windows radio with MP3 player, cruise control and tilt steering wheel. Higher trim levels offer a few modern features, such as keyless entry. Passenger van models can also be upgraded with goodies like a touchscreen, navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth.

2023 GMC Savana Engines

As we mentioned, the diesel version has been discontinued, so the offer now includes only two gasoline versions. Base models use a good-old 4.3-liter V6, which is good for about 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of torque, which is plenty enough to do the job. Still, we would rather pay extra for the optional, newer-generation 6.6-liter V8, which is good for about 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque.

Both engines come coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which does the job pretty well. On the other hand,  fuel economy is practically the same for both engines and goes around 11 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the highway.
