Mazda has a pretty decent tradition in making minivans. Known as either Mazda 5 or Premacy, its minivan was in production for quite a long time. The last version ended its production in 2018 and if we can trust rumors, it could come back in the near future. However, things would look a little bit different this time, as the new model would probably get bigger and come with new technology. Some reports even suggest it could come next year as the 2022 Mazda 5.
At this point, the details are still unavailable. However, it looks like Mazda is about to share technology with some other manufacturers with this project. As you may presume, that particularly refers to Toyota, as the two companies already share some models and platforms. Does this mean that the 2022 Mazda 5 could have a lot in common with Toyota Sienna? Probably.
2022 Mazda 5 Design
As we’ve just mentioned, there is a big chance that the 2022 Mazda 5, if it’s about to come back, will share a lot of parts with the Toyota Sienna. Toyota’s minivan has just been redesigned and it competes pretty well in North America. So, it could borrow the platform the Mazda’s new minivan.
The only problem with this is that the Sienna looks too big when compared to the previous generations of Mazda 5. Mazda’s MPV was based on the compact Mazda 3, so it’s no wonder that the platform would be downsized in this case. However, the overall size would still be bigger compared to the previous generation.
Mechanically, the two companies would share a lot but we are pretty sure that the 2022 Mazda 5 won’t be just a re-badged version of Sienna. We are pretty sure that Mazda would like to implement its design philosophy, known as the KODO design language. So, even though we are talking about a minivan, we believe that Mazda could put a little bit of its magic to it and make it look elegant and gorgeous. In other words, it should look more appealing than the rivals.
We also presume that the overall size would be smaller compared to Sienna. Something like 7/8 of Sienna’s size sounds likely, which would make this car more maneuverable and easier to drive.
Of course, the smaller size would negatively impact the cabin space, but we presume there would be enough room to accommodate three spacious rows of seats. The cargo area should offer decent numbers as well, though smaller compared to the future sibling.
Besides enough space, we expect to see a well-designed interior, in Mazda’s typical fashion. In other words, the materials and build quality should be pretty impressive, while the utilization of high-quality materials would make this cabin look really upscale.
2022 Mazda 5 Engine
This is where we expect to see the most similarities with Toyota Sienna. The 2022 Mazda 5 would probably borrow the powertrain from Sienna. That means we would see a hybrid setup that combines electric motors with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, for a total output of 245 horsepower. That would ensure decent performance, while the strongest point would be fuel economy.
The current Sienna returns around 35 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. We presume that the 2022 Mazda 5 could be even more efficient, thanks to the smaller size and less weight.
2022 Mazda 5 Release Date and Price
At this point, the 2022 Mazda 5 is just a rumor and you should take its arrival with a big reserve. However, keep in mind these rumors as well, which suggest the nameplate could be revived already in the next year. When it comes to the price, we presume that base versions would go around 30.000 dollars.
