A lot of great things are about to come from Mazda in the future but the Japanese manufacturer does everything at a steady pace. Therefore, the current flagship model is expected to remain in production for some more time, as the replacement won’t be ready in the next year or two. So, you may expect to see the 2023 Mazda CX-9 pretty much unchanged, though there is always room for minor updates, such as new color options, more standard equipment and similar things.

All in all, the next year’s model will bring a familiar layout. We are about to see a model that still has a lot of great things to offer, despite the age. We like its design, we like its interior even more. Also, the turbocharged engine offers a great balance between performance and economy, while the chassis and suspension come in Mazda’s typical fashion, which means a lot of athleticism. On the other hand, what we don’t like are things like the tight third row and small cargo area.

Since there are no bigger changes to come, we expect that the 2023 Mazda CX-9 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year, without bigger price changes.

2023 Mazda CX-9 Design

The current generation of Mazda’s three-row SUV has been around since 2016. However, it still looks very nice. Thanks to the famous KODO design language, it is still among the most attractive models in the lineup, characterized by clean and elegant lines. Some sources suggest new color options for the next year, but the officials are still quiet on this matter.

What’s even more impressive is the chassis and suspension setup. We really like how this SUV drives. It offers more athleticism than any other model in the class but at the same time, it isn’t too firm. Moreover, the ride is smooth and comfortable.

Interior

Interior designs have always been Mazda’s thing and this model is no exception. You can see Mazda’s typical design approach, which combines simplicity with elegant lines and high-quality materials. Premium soft-touch materials are all around the cabin, while there is also a lot of attention to detail. Furthermore, we really like the elegant instrument cluster design, which makes this dashboard look even more premium.

2023 Mazda CX-9 Interior

When it comes to the interior space, the first row is spacious and comfortable, with very good seats. The second row is also pretty spacious and comfortable. On the other hand, the third row is very tight, even by the segment standards.

The same problem is with the cargo area, which is among the smallest in the segment. You may count on no more than 14.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third-row seats, 38.2 cubic feet with these seats folded, and 71.2 cubic feet of the total cargo volume. For reference, the Toyota Highlander offers around 84 cubic feet of the total cargo space.

Features

We don’t believe that the next year’s model could bring more important changes in this aspect. Therefore, all versions should come standard with goodies like tri-zone climate control, push-button start, keyless entry, a 10.3-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hot spot. Also, count on optional features like a moonroof, proximity keyless entry, navigation, wireless device charging, satellite radio, a 12-speaker stereo, and four additional USB ports.

When it comes to safety and driver-assistance features, all models should come standard with goodies like a rearview camera, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, automatic high beams etc. The list of options should include front and rear parking sensors, surround-view camera, road sign recognition, adaptive headlights, driver attention alert etc.

2023 Mazda CX-9 Engine

This aspect won’t bring any surprises. The 2023 Mazda CX-9 will continue with a familiar 2.5-liter turbo-four, which comes in pair with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The total output goes up to 250 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque if you use premium fuel. However, this engine also runs on regular gasoline but in that case, the max output goes down to 227 horses and 310 lb-ft of torque. In both cases, driving dynamics are pretty good.

Another important thing to mention is that all models come standard with all-wheel drive. The average fuel economy goes around 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, which is pretty good for a mid-size SUV with all-wheel drive.
