The Korean premium carmaker is expanding its lineup and it looks like the time for big things has come. After a pretty successful mid-size GV80 model, it’s time for the company to enter the full-size SUV segment. The new model will come as the 2023 Genesis GV90 and it will be the company’s new flagship model, along with the G90 sedan, which is about to receive a full redesign for the next year. Moreover, these two models will share a lot of parts, whether it’s about mechanics or aesthetics.
The 2023 Genesis GV90 will be based on the second-generation G90 sedan. It will ride on the same platform, featuring the same powertrain and borrow a lot of aesthetical solutions. However, it will also come with a lot of exclusive design solutions, in order to compete in a highly demanding segment, where some of the key players are models like the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS.
We expect to see the 2023 Genesis GV90 by the end of this year, or in the first half of 2023.
2023 Genesis GV90 Design
In terms of the base design, the 2023 Genesis GV90 will ride on the same platform as the upcoming second-generation G90 full-size. The two models will share a lot of parts, maybe even the wheelbase, which would go over 125 inches. Therefore, the new SUV would ride on a unibody platform, just like the German competition, and unlike the North American players in the segment, such as Jeep Grand Wagoneer or Lincoln Navigator, which ride on a truck-based, body-on-frame architecture. Therefore, it’s easy to conclude that this SUV will be all about comfort and smooth ride, rather than being off-road capable or something like that.
When it comes to aesthetics, we expect to see a tight connection with the G90 once again. The 2023 Genesis GV90 will follow the same design language, characterized by a massive grille, dual headlight stripes and other design solutions. Despite the SUV layout, we count on smooth lines and rounded edges, which will provide a classic design and keep this model fresh and looking for a long time.
Interior
On the inside, we will see influence from the sedan sibling once again. This particularly refers to the dashboard design, which should look largely the same. That would be a great thing, considering that the new dash looks really amazing. It is completely covered with soft-touch materials and features mostly simple and horizontal lines. Such a combination of simple shapes and fine materials makes the cabin look very elegant. Furthermore, all this is complemented with a couple of massive but elegantly designed screens, as well as with other tech features.
Considering the wheelbase and the expected overall dimension, there is no doubt that the 2023 Genesis GV90 will be one extremely spacious SUV. Of course, three rows of seats will be standard and even the third row should be spacious and comfortable enough to accommodate adults with ease. The front seats should offer plenty of room and great support, while the SUV shape will provide generous amounts of headroom as well. Logically, the cargo area should also be very generous. We may even see numbers that are comparable with BoF rivals, such as the Cadillac Escalade.
The list of standard equipment will certainly be very long, whether it’s about tech, safety or convenience features.
2023 Genesis GV90 Engines
In terms of the powertrain, we don’t expect surprises. The lineup should be the same as in the upcoming sedan, which means two engine options on the offer. The base one will be a rather familiar setup that includes a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 that puts out around 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, which seems plenty enough to move this large SUV with ease.
On the other hand, the optional powertrain setup would use the same V6 engine but coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. So, the total output would go up to 409 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque.
Both engines will come coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which was developed by Genesis’s parent company, Hyundai.
2023 Genesis GV90 Release Date and Price
The 2023 Genesis GV90 will probably arrive some time in the last quarter of this year, eventually in the first half of 2023. When it comes to the price, we estimate that the base version could cost around 80.000 dollars.
