Last year, Toyota finally started renewing its body on frame lineup. The Tundra was completely redesigned, as well as Sequoia and Land Cruiser. So, everyone is now waiting for the next generation of Toyota’s famous off-roader, the 4Runner. The current generation has been around for way too long and definitely needs updates. We expect that the new generation could arrive already in the next year, as the 2024 Toyota 4Runner. The officials are still quiet.
In any case, we have huge expectations from the new model. Although the current generation feels outdated in many ways, it still offers a well-balanced chassis and exceptional reliability. The new model will have to bring improvements regarding the powertrain, while we also expect to see new aesthetics and more refinement. Of course, the new cabin is also expected.
The all-new 2024 Toyota 4Runner should arrive sometime in the second half of 2023.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Redesign
The current generation has been around for almost 14 years, so there is no doubt that the number of changes will be significant. First of all, count on the new platform. Just like the aforementioned models, the new 4Runner will also ride on the new TNGA-F architecture, and we count on various improvements. One of them will be weight reduction, while we also expect to see a lower center of gravity, which would have a highly positive impact on on-road manners, which is currently the 4Runner’s weak point.
However, off-road performance will remain the key thing about this SUV. The new generation is about to bring lots of off-road features again, starting from off-road suspension. Of course, we would see all kinds of off-road goodies, such as locking differentials, crawl control, skid plates and many more.
When it comes to the exterior design, we expect to see a completely new appearance. The new styling should bring significant changes, which is no wonder if we consider that the outgoing model hasn’t changed much since the initial launch. The new styling should be based on the brand’s latest design language and we have no doubt that some inspiration will be taken from the new Tundra and Sequoia models.
On the other hand, we don’t expect to see bigger changes regarding the size. The wheelbase will probably remain the same, just like the overall length. Simply, with a relatively short wheelbase for the class and short overhangs, the new 4Runner will retain super-strong off-road potential, with great maneuverability, great approach and departure angles etc.
Not many things changed during this production cycle, so it’s no wonder that the current cabin is considered outdated. Simply, the dashboard looks old, and the materials aren’t particularly great either. Of course, this will change with the new model, when we expect to see notable improvements. More attractive aesthetics and nicer materials are pretty much a certain thing, just like the new tech features.
As we’ve just mentioned, the new model probably won’t feature bigger changes in terms of size. Therefore, we expect that the new generation will feature a similar amount of passenger space. Base models will probably feature two rows, while the third row of seats would be optional and it wouldn’t be particularly generous with space. On the other hand, we expect solid cargo capacity.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Engines
This is where we expect to see big changes. The outgoing model features a good-old 4.0-liter V6, which may be super-reliable but isn’t very competitive when it comes to power and fuel economy. Therefore, it’s no wonder that most reports suggest the new 2.4-liter turbo-four with around 275 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. Some sources also suggest that the higher trim levels could come with the new 3.4-liter turbo V6, with a max output of around 350 horsepower. Of course, we would also see a new transmission, probably an 8- or 10-speed unit.
Also, we won’t exclude the possibility to see a hybrid powertrain. Some rumors speculate about a system that’s based on a turbo-four engine, which would feature a combined output of more than 350 horsepower. At this point, the officials are still quiet, so take this with reserve.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Release Date and Price
We believe that the next-generation 2024 Toyota 4Runner could arrive already in the second half of the next year, with a starting price that goes between 40.000 and 45.000 dollars. Of course, four-door versions of Bronco and Wrangler will remain key competitors.
