After so many years of waiting, Toyota Sequoia finally came redesigned for the 2023 model year. This overhaul happened after a 15-year-long production cycle of the previous generation, so it’s no wonder that the changes and improvements were significant. So, we are now heading to the 2024 Toyota Sequoia, which will represent the second production year of the new generation. Normally, we wouldn’t expect bigger changes but it looks like the Japanese manufacturer prepares a new version.
Namely, the initial model came only with a hybrid powertrain, so the latest reports suggest that the Japanese manufacturer could offer a more basic variant, equipped with a gasoline powertrain. This would make the SUV more affordable and also attract those buyers that don’t necessarily need modern hybrid technology. Moreover, the new gasoline version could also bring benefits regarding interior space and practicality.

2024 Toyota Sequoia Engines
As we’ve just mentioned, there are various reports that suggest the 2024 Toyota Sequoia offered with a new powertrain option. At this moment, there is only a hybrid version on offer, so many expect to see a pure gasoline version as well. That model would rely on a familiar 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6, the same one that powers the Tundra pickup. This engine also comes in pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission and features a max output of around 389 horsepower and 379 pound-feet of torque.
We expect that the new gasoline engine would be available in all variants of the SUV, including the off-road-oriented TRD Pro trim. This version comes with lots of upgrades, such as heavy-duty Fox shock absorbers, 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, a skid plate etc.
On the other hand, the hybrid version would continue in the same way, based on the same V6 engine. The help comes from the electric motor, so the combined output goes up to 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. That’s plenty enough for strong driving dynamics, while the average fuel economy remains very good for a full-size SUV. In numbers, that would be around 21 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

On the other hand, we definitely don’t expect to see more important changes regarding base design. The recent redesign has brought a lot of new things, starting with a completely new platform. OF course, we are talking about the same TNGA-F architecture that underpins the new Tundra. The benefits are numerous, starting from the significant weight reduction, new suspension setup that improved ride quality a lot etc. Another thing we like about the suspension is that, besides a smooth ride, it also offers some of the highest towing ratings in the class, which goes up to 9.520 pounds.
In terms of aesthetics, the new generation looks bold and aggressive, with many attractive design solutions. Therefore, we doubt that the next year’s model could bring more important changes, though things like new color options and minor styling tweaks are always possible.
New Engine and Interior
The new gasoline engine options would bring not just more customization options. It could also solve some of the main issues of the current generation. Namely, despite all the benefits of the hybrid powertrain, there is always the matter of the battery placement, which is located under the rear seats. As a result, the cargo area is significantly smaller compared to rivals like Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition. Moreover, the fact that rear seats don’t fold flat is probably an even bigger issue. We presume that these issues would phase out with the gasoline version. Namely, the third-row seats would be replaced with more comfortable ones, with more space and better design. The first two rows would remain unchanged, as they already offer plenty of space and great comfort.
On the other hand, the dashboard and overall cabin layout would remain the same. The new cabin looks attractive and features pretty good build quality. Moreover, there is also a pretty generous offer of tech and convenience features.
All models come standard with goodies like an 8-inch touch screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, satellite radio, an eight-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, multiple USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, tri-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, push-button start and a moonroof. Among upgrades, you can get a 14-inch touch screen, a 14-speaker stereo, wireless device charging, a 120-volt household-style power outlet, rear sunshades, a panoramic moon roof etc.
2024 Toyota Sequoia Release Date and Price
We expect that the 2024 Toyota Sequoia will arrive sometime in the last quarter of the year. If the gasoline version happens, the starting price would be lower and more competitive. For reference, the current hybrid model costs nearly 60.000 dollars.
