The German manufacturer is bringing back the flavor of the legendary Type 2 minibus. After so many years, VW comes back to the U.S. market with a brand-new passenger van and, in accordance with modern industry standards, it will be all-electric. The new model will arrive in about a year or so and it will come as the 2024 VW ID Buzz. From what we know so far, it will come to North America in just one version, with a stretched wheelbase and seven seats.

The new van looks pretty interesting, mostly because it closely resembles the famous predecessor. However, that won’t be its main quality. We can also see a nicely designed interior, which should be pretty generous with space as well. Also, we know that the van will be available both in single- and dual-motor layouts, while the company promises a pretty respectable range.

The latest reports suggest that the 2024 VW ID Buzz will arrive in late 2023 or early 2024.

2024 VW ID Buzz Design

In terms of base design characteristics, the 2024 VW ID Buzz will share a lot with the rest of the ID family. Many technical solutions will be borrowed from models like ID.4, starting from the company’s new MEB platform, dedicated to electric cars. With this platform, the ID Buzz will be able to provide respectable battery performance, without sacrificing interior space. On the other hand, details about the suspension setup are still unknown but we presume things could be similar to the aforementioned electric crossover, which features multi-link in the back. The same thing is with brakes, which means that the new van could utilize drum brakes on the rear wheels.

In terms of styling, it’s obvious that the 2024 VW ID Buzz takes a lot of inspiration from the Type 2 minibus. The styling offers a lot of resemblances, in a combination with a couple of futuristic details that accentuate the model’s all-electric nature. From what we know so far, the North American version will come in just one variant, as a stretched-wheelbase passenger van.

Interior

The overall design approach isn’t much different on the inside. There, you can also see a lot of retro elements that resemble the old predecessor. However, the van also comes full of modern tech features, including a digital instrument cluster and a pretty massive infotainment screen. The overall dashboard design looks pretty nice, while the build quality is at a decent level as well.

Besides joyful color schemes, this cabin will also offer a lot of space, with three rows of seats that can all accommodate adult passengers. The standard version will accommodate up to seven passengers. Besides plenty of space, the cabin will offer decent cargo capacity. As the battery will be placed under the floor, the cargo area won’t be compromised. As a result, the van will offer 40 cubic feet behind the third-row seats.

Features

As we already mentioned, the 2024 VW ID Buzz should come equipped with all kinds of tech features. One of them will be a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, along with the standard 10-inch infotainment screen. An even bigger, 12-inch infotainment screen will be optional. The list of standard features should also include goodies like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while wireless phone charging and WiFi hotspots will be optional.

We also count on a decent number of safety features. All models should come standard with things like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist etc. On the other hand, things like adaptive cruise control should be available.

2024 VW ID Buzz Drivetrain

From what we know so far, the 2024 VW ID Buzz won’t be much different from the rest of the ID family in this aspect. Therefore, base models will come with a single electric motor, mounted on the rear axle. This unit puts out 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, which should be enough to ensure decent performance. On the other hand, higher trim levels will come with an additional electric motor on the front axle, so the max output would go up to 295 horsepower.

When it comes to the battery package, most sources suggest a 77-kWh pack, which would ensure up to 260 miles on a single charge. Speaking of charging, the company claims that, with a DC fast charger, 5-to-80% charging of the battery will be done in 30 minutes.

2024 VW ID Buzz Release Date and Price

We expect that the 2024 VW ID Buzz will arrive in late 2023 or early 2024, with a starting price of around 40.000 dollars. Since there aren’t many all-electric passenger vans on the market today, key competitors will be hybrid minivans like Chrysler Pacifica and Toyota Sienna.
