2024 VW Touareg Gets Mid-Cycle Refresh

700 0

The third generation of VW’s flagship SUV may drop from the U.S. market in 2018 but remain active in Europe, Australia and many other parts of the world, as a luxurious proposition that comes at a little bit more reasonable price compared to most other luxury SUVs, including the closest relative – the Audi Q7. Now, five years later, it was time for updates and that’s why we are happy to share with you that the 2024 VW Touareg is coming with notable updates. More precisely, some versions, such as the high-performance, R-badged model, already debuted in Germany and a few more markets.

So far, the company sold more than 200.000 examples of the current generation and now the plan is to reinforce its position on the market with a set of interesting updates. This is a typical mid-cycler refresh, but a comprehensive one, with novelties in various aspects. For example, the styling has been updated, but there are some interesting novelties on the inside as well. Most importantly, the powertrain lineup has been revised and now includes two electrified variants.

We expect that the complete offer of the 2024 VW Touareg lineup will be ready in the last quarter of the year in all markets where this model used to be sold in the last few years.

So, let’s start with the updates. The first thing to check would be the aesthetical aspect of the vehicle. The styling gets a couple of nice updates, on both ends of the vehicle. At the front, you can see a new pair of headlights, completely redesigned, with the latest Matrix technology. These micro-LED units debuted in Porsche Cayenne recently, and now come to provide the best illumination for Touareg. The headlights feature a fancy new triple “L” inner design, and the same trio can be noticed on the inside as well.

Another thing you’ll notice on the rear end is the illuminated badge on the tailgate, for the first time in this SUV. Another for-first-time thing on this SUV is the set of massive 22-inch wheels. These wheels come in a Silicon Gray Matt finish and they are exclusive to the R and R-line models. The rest of the 2024 VW Touareg lineup will come with a range of wheel options from 19 to 21 inches in size.

Besides visual enhancements, VW engineers also slightly modified suspension, both standard steel and optional air suspension. The new model should offer an even greater level of comfort. Another novelty is the added roof load sensor.

Interior

It may come with the Volkswagen badge, but this is a genuine luxury SUV and its cabin has always been the best proof. The overall build quality, as well as the selection of materials, is great, so the fact that things in the 2024 VW Touareg have remained largely the same isn’t a big deal at all.

Moreover, we really like it, and this includes the tech features too, which now come with subtle but very important updates. The familiar combination of a 12-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15-inch infotainment system is still there but the software has been updated and now offers higher-resolution map data, with super-precise lane-level navigation. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now part of the standard equipment, while voice control has been upgraded too.

The 2024 VW Touareg also gets new ambient lighting, along with a fancy new “Touareg” lettering on the passenger’s side of the dashboard. A few more tech features have been added, including a head-up display, as well as new USB-C ports.

Big novelties are coming under the hood as well, as the German manufacturer will now have two electrified powertrain options on offer. The high-performance R model will continue in the same way, with a plug-in hybrid setup that involves a familiar 3.0-liter turbocharged V6, with a max output of 456 horsepower. A less capable plug-in hybrid is the novelty, with the same engine but lower combined output, which goes around 375 horsepower.

Base models will continue with a gas-only powertrain, with a good-old 3.0-liter V6 that features a max output of 335 horsepower. As for the diesel versions, the monstrous V8 TDI has been gone for a while, and six is the only number of cylinders you can get. We are talking about the well-known 3.0-liter TDI, which comes in two output variants, with 228 or 282 horsepower.

All engines come coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.
